I rather enjoyed a lot of this book which is full of the authors usual humour and excellent characterisation however, there are some major issues that have affected my rating of the book My main problem with the book is it s far too long The plot is so slight that the story could have been told in half the time and the way the story progresses is very predictable Enjoyable but very uneven.

This novel was despised by both M.R James and H.P Lovecraft with the latter judging it to be abominably insipid , and who am I to disagree In my opinion, this is easily the worst thing Sheridan Le Fanu ever wrote, and, in the near future, I intend to write a long, vitriolic and yet hopefully humorous review concerning the entire fiasco Well, thankfully, so much of the rest of Le Fanu s work is worth your reading time, and I suppose any great writer or artist can have their off moments.
