***This book was given to me by the author for an honest review***

Charlotte (Charlie) left her husband James after he came to her with a proposition - to have an open marriage. When he left for work one day, she packed her stuff and fled to her parents’ home. As the book progresses, she meets up with her old friends who end up introducing her to her new future. Enter Melody. She is the owner/operator of Melody’s Magazine that represents music and musicians. Since Charlotte’s ex knew all the rich and famous, Melody asked if she could try and get an interview with the lead singer, Bill Graham, from a popular band called The Sticks.

Charlotte succeeded in securing the interview, and soon after, Melody hired her as one of the magazine’s freelancers. Charlotte’s life begins to take on meaning and provides her with much needed independence and confidence. Bill invites her and Raven (magazine’s photographer) to their sold out show, providing them with all access. This helps them to really see what it’s like to be “in the band.” Unfortunately, something terrible happens after one of the shows. One of the band members, Tiger, if found dead from an overdose of drugs and alcohol after being clean for 30 years. With pieces missing in his death, Charlotte suspects foul play. She decides to investigate Tiger’s death and who killed him, uncovering a string of murders/deaths that are all connected.

This was a great murder mystery! The author does a great job with the plot! I really enjoyed the characters and their descriptions. Charlotte is an amazing example of independence and courage. She left her rich lifestyle because she was unhappy, and pursued an area of life she was clueless about. She seemed capable of anything - being an interviewer, detective, etc. Anything that was thrown her way, she tackled. I really enjoyed her character!

This is a story about the rock and roll lifestyle, including fame, money, greed, and excess. At first, I couldn't figure out how the character of Charlotte Hart fit in with the rock and roll set. Then she got a job where she was exposed to that environment. The mystery element was pretty good; one of the band members of the Sticks, Tiger Edwards, turns up dead of an overdose. That in itself is not extraordinary; rockers end up dead that way quite often, given the lifestyle they lead. But things don't add up in this case--you'd expect some kind of drug paraphernalia in a case like that but there was none--and even though Charlotte isn't a detective, she tries to figure out what's going on with this mystery.

The characters in the story are well drawn out, though I found myself disliking several of them, which was the point. The author does a great job of immersing the reader in the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and seems to have good insight into the lifestyle of the glitterati. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of rock and roll and/or mysteries with some colorful characters.

  3. The Literary Chick says:

Great, great book. The author captures authenticity and the particular set of dynamics among the moneyed, decadent, amoral rock set. The mystery angle works well as a newbie writer on assignment is drawn into an entire world completely alien to the one she knows. Highly recommended to those who will find the rock lifestyle familiar and to those who want to get a safer glimpse of what it's like, and especially captivating because it's done within the context of an intelligently woven mystery.

If, like me, you are a fan of rock and roll and always secretly wanted to live a rock lifestyle, this book is definitely for you. Teddie Dahlin's tale of rock intrigue, mystery, greed and excess blends elements of rock with the best aspects of the thriller. The treatment of the rock star life is authentic, and Teddie builds a series of characters who I began to feel I knew as the story and intrigue developed. They are all there: the aging rock star (wish that was me), the bodyguard, the awful manager, and even a punk grandma. I found the twists and turns of the plot utterly compelling and couldn't put the book down. The story also relates to real modern-day events, which makes it all that more believable and enjoyable. If you enjoy mystery tales, and rock music, and particularly if you like your fiction to be authentic and believable, read this book. You won't be disappointed.
