Although this book is about Danish societal values, the 10 secret principles can also be applied to one s personal life to becomecontent Author Rydahl grew up in Denmark and moved to Paris at age 18 to pursue her dream career Raised to be self reliant, practical, and to appreciate others, she tried several jobs before finding her ideal career and lifestyle Her parents, in typical Danish fashion, did not interfere with her decisions and encouraged her to become the person that she want Although this book is about Danish societal values, the 10 secret principles can also be applied to one s personal life to becomecontent Author Rydahl grew up in Denmark and moved to Paris at age 18 to pursue her dream career Raised to be self reliant, practical, and to appreciate others, she tried several jobs before finding her ideal career and lifestyle Her parents, in typical Danish fashion, did not interfere with her decisions and encouraged her to become the person that she wanted to be The 10 Danish values principles are as follows trusting others, choosing education relevant to the individual, independence and freedom of choice, equal opportunity regardless family income, life dreams tempered with realistic expectations, solidarity and respect for others, healthy work life balance, seeking job satisfaction rather than high income, modesty about one s achievements, and equal opportunity and compensation among genders Happy as a Dane is part memoir and part social analysis It implies that readers can increase their happiness by identifying areas in which their attitudes or life situations can be improved, and then applying the relevant principles The book is short and easy to read It is not a step by step process to become happier Instead, readers can choose whether to employ the Danish principle of self reliance to up their life game, or simply learn about life and values in Denmark.Three things that I particularly like about this book 1 Although the book is about Danish values, in the last chapter Rydahl reviews each happiness principle and gives examples of how they ve been used elsewhere in the world, for example in China, Pakistan, Canada, and Bangladesh 2 At the very end, Rydahl applies the principles to list ten ways to make one s personal life happier These include ignoring society s standards in favor of self expression, not comparing oneself to others, being honest with oneself, always having a Plan B, choosing one s battles, living in the present, and loving others 3 Rydahl cites her research in the endnotes, backing up her statements with sources. This quick read will interest readers who want to create a happier, egalitarian society Seekers of increased personal happiness will also enjoy it

The 3rd one I have read on this topic what can I say It is interesting usually , this rates the lowest Her list of reasons Danes rate as happy rings true though I don t see that they were in any way secrets So there is that And she tries to be evenhanded though this sometimes detracts from the points she is trying to make. However, I had a hard time relegating the fact that the author left as soon as she could and chooses to live somewhere else yes, she has legitimate reasons, but The 3rd one I have read on this topic what can I say It is interesting usually , this rates the lowest Her list of reasons Danes rate as happy rings true though I don t see that they were in any way secrets So there is that And she tries to be evenhanded though this sometimes detracts from the points she is trying to make. However, I had a hard time relegating the fact that the author left as soon as she could and chooses to live somewhere else yes, she has legitimate reasons, but it still takes away from any credibility.Overall though, the worst thing about this book is the writing style For a book that harps on modesty, it comes across as uncomfortably smug The order of topics could have been better leading to less need for the but we ll talk about that later bit that came much too often The statistics are random and all over the map 20% of the 90% of those who read it agree It just came across as a pretentious attempt to capitalize on a trend There are muchgenuine attempts available which is why it became a trend in the first place

Interesting, but not earth shattering This might have been better as an article But there is some good information It is a relatively short read, and it probably could have been condensed evento make the informationimpactful.

  5. Madeleine (Top Shelf Text) says:

I found this book interesting, but after reading I felt it would be better off as a long article instead The 10 secrets to Danish esque happiness are summarized in the back of the book, so it would have been just as effective to read just that summary rather than the whole book.

  6. Madelyn Flammia says:

An interesting perspective on Danish culture and why the Danes are so happy Very enjoyable.

  7. Amanda says:

I am interested in this topic, but this book, despite being only around 130 pages, was slow going The writing was dry, the material was not particularly interesting, and it offered no new insights into the topic Also, although Danish, the author left the country decades ago and has chosen to live in France, which sort of undermines the message Try The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell instead It covers the same ground, but with some personality.

  8. Peter Herrmann says:

All her points make sense But many of them are easier said than done For instance, in the conclusion, know yourself I m 72 years old but still haven t quite figured that one out Have to wonder if I d be happier having been born and raised in Denmark But as the author herself admits, not every Dane is necessarily happy.

Straightforward, common sense advice on living a good life

the end of 2017 was, how can I live a happier life in 2018 I have already been taking steps toward living aminimalist lifestyle and takingtime for myself, so when I stumbled across Happy as a Dane by Malene Rydahl, I was definitely intrigued I needed to know what makes the people of Denmark so happy Rydahl s book, while relatively short, is packed with both detailed research and real life examples The book is broken down into ten chapters one for every secret and a conclusion I won t tell you all of the secrets here because you should definitely go read or listen to the book for yourself , but I wanted to point out a couple of the concepts that stood out to me the most.TRUSTThe book started out with a concept that automatically made me feel hopeless Apparently a secret to Danish happiness is trust This trust comes in two forms The first being trust in your fellow citizen Rydahl provided examples of people being able to leave a money bucket at unattended fruit carts and even being able to leave their baby alone outside while they go into a restaurant because they are able to trust that their fellow citizens will do the right thing They are raised knowing the importance of trust and being trustworthy, so it is normal to be trusting This secret also takes the form of trust in the government Rydahl provided an example of the rare time that a politician broke the trust of the people and the consequences that resulted. So why does this make me feel hopeless I can t imagine being able to have that type of trust in either my fellow citizen or my government While I trust the people in my life for the most part, wouldn t it be foolish to just start blindly trusting strangers If we knowingly left our money out in the open, and someone else stole it, wouldn t the reaction be why in the world did you leave it out what did you expect I feel like in general, we are taught to not trust people Don t talk to strangers Don t give out any personal information That s how we keep ourselves safe When I listened to this portion I wondered how are we supposed to implement this into our own life You can t just decide to trust people when you have no control over their actions You can t teach your children to trust everyone, and then have them be harmed as a result And trust in the government That sounds like a joke Oh, to be a Dane, I suppose.EDUCATIONIn chapter two, Rydahl goes into detail about how the education system is structured in Denmark According to her, the Danes believe in aloosely structured education that promotes creativity and free thinking rather than rote subject memorization While this definitely sounds interesting, the subject of education is really broad and education reform is pretty controversial However, there are a couple of elements of Danish education that I think could be really valuable The first being what I am going to call personality classes, as I do not remember the Danish term and unfortunately no longer have access to the book In Denmark, students have the option of taking an additional year of schooling that promotes the development of the personality This could mean learning about how to work with other people or even figuring out what your interests are or what your strengths and weaknesses are I think this time spent trying to figure out who you are in a guided way would be extremely valuable in developing happier, well rounded, and well adjusted citizens Do I think this would ever become a thing in the United States Probably not, but maybe we could at least include a mandatory class to every grade level In a similar fashion, the second thing that stood out to me was that schools provide individualized career counseling to students by trying to figure out the potential careers that will provide the student with the most meaningful life based on their interests and strengths Looking back at my own high school experience, I can only remember going to my guidance counselor two times The first time was as a freshman because of a scheduling conflict with my class schedule The second time was senior year when all of the seniors had to schedule a mandatory meeting with their counselor to make sure they had all of the requirements to graduate on time There was never a time where I sat down with a counselor to figure out what to do with my life As a student in honors classes, the only option promoted was to go to college What I studied once I got there That was up to me to figure out Eight years after graduating high school and having now completed an undergrad and grad degree, I really wish that someone would have sat me down and helped me figure out which careers I might have actually been suited for It might have prevented four years of unnecessary education courses in college. Finally, I think I have to briefly mention the fact that higher education is free in Denmark for Danish students I mean, who wouldn t be happier without having to worry about paying off a ridiculous amount of student loans I know I would be.WORK LIFE BALANCE RELATIONSHIP WITH MONEYThis wasn t the first time that I heard that not all countries are so hung up on careers and making lots of money as we typically are in the USA, so it was interesting to hear Rydahl reinforce this idea in two of her chapters that focus on work life balance secret 7 and relationship with money secret 8 I ve never been the type who understood the concept of the workaholic Unless you love your jobthan anything, life is too short to spend not only working hours but also all of your free time working and worrying about work If you work hard at your job, then you deserve to use the rest of your time for yourself and your family Along with this, there is much less emphasis on choosing careers that will make the most amount of money and insteademphasis is placed on finding jobs that make the most sense for each person The idea of choosing a job that makes you happy seems to be the actual reality of the Danes.MODESTYIf your first thought in hearing the word modesty is dressing modestly, then keep reading The Danes simply don t promote the idea of needing to be the best at everything all the time Rydahl goes into detail about different ways that this concept alters the Danish way of life, but one area where it stood out to me was in regards to mental health Denmark has one of the highest if not the highest, I can t remember uses of antidepressants While this may seem like it contradicts the title of the book, the reality is that because the Danes are encouraged to really know themselves as individuals and not be embarrassed by what other people may view as flaws, people with mental health issues arewilling to get help If everyone struggling with mental illness felt safe and encouraged to get the help that they need, I think every country would be a little happier. While I briefly discussed five of the secrets discussed in Happy as a Dane, I definitely recommend picking up a copy of the book to hearabout those secrets and the five others. While some of the secrets may seem a little harder to achieve in your own life, Rydahl provides examples in her conclusion of people outside of Denmark who have shown that incorporating these secrets is possible Also, if you think that this is simply a book praising everything about Denmark and ignoring the reality, then you will be happy to know that Rydahl also includes what she or others consider to be the downfalls that come a long with following the Danish happiness secrets Read the book to find outIf you liked this
