This was tough going and it would have helped if Jones had mentioned the extensive glossary in the back somewhere other than the TOC do you read the TOC This is very detail oriented and he tries to give a very exacting within the evidence left description of the bureaucracy, the class structure, etc What changed when the Roman Empire declined Why did East and West face different futures It was interesting but be prepared to jump back and forth from the text to the glossary.

An old textbook, and a really solid sort of work I really liked it when I was into this period of history at university, and one of the textbooks that I read cover to cover.
