The Emotional Rape Syndrome promised its readers to shed light onto what exactly emotional rape includes verbal, emotional, covert abuse and passive aggressiveness, anything targeted to destroy a person s mind and emotions and to help the reader heal from it So far so good It starts out a bit bumpy as the author seems to struggle to come up with an actual definition or to know where he wanted to go with his theory initially So there are a few rather long winded paragraphs and case examples The Emotional Rape Syndrome promised its readers to shed light onto what exactly emotional rape includes verbal, emotional, covert abuse and passive aggressiveness, anything targeted to destroy a person s mind and emotions and to help the reader heal from it So far so good It starts out a bit bumpy as the author seems to struggle to come up with an actual definition or to know where he wanted to go with his theory initially So there are a few rather long winded paragraphs and case examples of people who were being abused so much emotionally that they lost their entire identity or even wanted to commit suicide But none of this was cause for me disliking this book in any way yet, although I am not sure if it s helpful to always try and come up with original terms for scientific or psychological terms and definitions I experienced the same challenge while reading Susan Forward s Men Who Hate Women book because she calls abusers misogynists, implying that female abusers are misandrists in turn or in LGBTQ relationships perhaps misogynists despite being female themselves But I will concede that in fact it rang true to me to call emotional or covert abusers rapists because that is essentially what is occurring They rape manipulate, steer, redirect, hold hostage or try to censor our deepest inner self, our feelings and thoughts, our very consciousness or soul if you want to get metaphysical about it That which makes us us muchthan our physical body does Then the author reveals himself for what he actually is A monotheist missionary out to save people from the devil who were abused because didn t you know If you do not acknowledge that people with personality disorders are actually EVIL which he posits is an actual and real scientific diagnosis then you CANNOT heal I put the devil in quotation marks because he doesn t go as far as wording it this way but he is adamant that evil s greatest trick to date is that it convinced us it doesn t exist Where have we heard this before Why yes exactly Fox further states that if you have no faith in a higher power, however you define God, you will lead a life full of misery and no recovery because faith is the one and only thing that can heal emotional rape and restore what he refers to the HALF factors health, achievement, love and faith In fact, faith is the only thing to heal much of anything else I rolled my eyes so hard at this I could see the front of my brain All of these bizarre theories make him just as much of an emotional abuser as the people he writes about that he and his little buddy M Scott Peck in his horrible, abusive, damaging and utterly unscientific book People of the Lie The Hope for Healing Human Evil accuse of being demonically possessed and stylize personality and mood disorders to be a global supernatural crisis Okay Let me stop you right there, bubba First of all, I am always AMAZED how people like this get their PhD s and MD s and whatever else in this regard Because frankly no, someone who holds such views should not be allowed to treat people These are the same medical doctors who tell patients that their cancer is back because they didn t bow to a 2,000 year old dead carpenter from the Middle East enough and the therapists who covertly attempt to push their Christian self help books on you It s simply outrageous It s equally confusing and contradicting that the author will go to great lengths to prove particularly via his case examples how well evil works for the evildoer, but halfway through the book he postulates that a world in which evil reigned greed, selfishness, malignant narcissism would ultimately collapse Um Have you watched the news lately Our entire Western society is built upon greed, selfishness and the narcissism of trying to find ourselves while walking all over the emotions of others Additionally, evil seems to have worked quite well for all the examples in the book because after they had discarded one victim or supply they went on to another as is always the case I only scrolled through the rest of this book once I had gotten halfway through because I didn t feel like poisoning my mind further So in conclusion I cannot recommend this book to anyone If you are already a monotheist this will certainly make your heart jump for joy but otherwise Do yourself a favor and read anything, anything else Harry Potter is a better self help book than this one frankly

At first I was hesitant about the use of the word rape in the title description, but reading the book it made sense I really related to the kind of awful relationships where you get completely taken advantage of Also the idea that codependency should not be immediately addressed in someone who experienced emotional rape is something for me to thinkabout, because I ve been focusing on codependency.
