    I wish I d had this book to share with students when we struggled to find good sources on Indigenous peoples The difficulty was in finding sources that didthan describe these groups in broad strokes and share only the basics food, clothing, etc Because the frame for this book is present day grandchildren visiting their grandparents two of the co authors who identify as Indigenous and learning about their culture, readers get a chance to see how Indigenous peoples in this area, and f I wish I d had this book to share with students when we struggled to find good sources on Indigenous peoples The difficulty was in finding sources that didthan describe these groups in broad strokes and share only the basics food, clothing, etc Because the frame for this book is present day grandchildren visiting their grandparents two of the co authors who identify as Indigenous and learning about their culture, readers get a chance to see how Indigenous peoples in this area, and from multiple groups like the Cree and the Chipewyan lived in the past and now in the present Woven into the various activities the grandchildren experience catching and skinning a beaver, building a tipi, smudging, listening to stories are statements about the belief systems of these Indigenous groups For example, when they make a tipi, there are details about what the poles represent members of the family Historical notes are present as well when we read about the children trapping the beaver, there are details about how the Indigenous peoples traded beaver pelts with European settlers for things like pots and bullets In that same section there s also a story one of the author s father told him about the beavers saving the people who were trapped on one side of the valley by building a particular dam in no time The reader gets a real sense of how things are done with intention and care based on ancient belief systems that are still relevant today.Lots and lots of photographs with captions that extend the ideas in the text Layout and design make this book easy for our students to navigate.Two of the co authors, Henry and Eileen Beaver, identify as Indigenous The third author, Mindy Willett, reveals some authority on the topic in the acknowledgments where the authors and photographer share gratitude to others for inviting them to join in at a sweat at their welcoming home and the opportunity to share in a bison harvest They also share gratitude to others for feedback I d BOOK TALK this with students even if they are not doing research Maybe share the title, state the premise grandchildren visiting grandparents , look at a few pages to make predictions and then leave in the classroom library to be snatched up Looking forward to reading other titles in this series

    A super informative, sweet book Follows grandchildren who come to visit their grandparents on the land We follow as they learn all about their traditions, including harvesting salt, trapping and using beavers, and putting up a tipi, which they use for the summer solstice Wonderful to read about people s traditions from their own loving perspective Plus, there are folktales.
