The place had a distinct medieval uality to it with its four large manor houses each strategically located on one of the primary compass points Storm Island Kate Pomeroy Mystery #1 by Linda Watkins Oh wow This is one of t he craziest books I have read in awhile It also crosses so many genres It is listed as a mysterythriller but just to list some of the other genresGothicRomanceHistoricalFolkloreFamily DramaMedical thrillerParanormalHorrorYou get all that? This was also a tough one for me to rate Here is whyBeginning fivemiddle twoSeriouslythis book was intenseSo it starts with Kate a Doctor witnessing a conversation she should not be hearing at the hospital where she works A short time later right before she is to begin surgery she collapses Has a complete breakdown She is evaluated and eventually released and sent to Storm Island to heal thereKate grew up on Storm Island and her memories of the place are not good Her mother died tragically there and Kate was the one to find her There are many secretsshe is unhappy about going back thereas well she should be because her journey and recovery there will change her lifeStorm Island has a great premise And it is a really spooky read As Kate goes about getting used to being there again she is haunted by a variety of utterly bizarre happenings including nightmares strange noises and hallucinationsDoes someone have it in for Kate? Is she imagining all this? Or has the past returned to guide the way for the present and for the future? There were many things I liked about Storm Island including that you do get hooked in and fly through the pages trying to figure out what is going onWhat I did not likeis that it is pretty easy to guess what is going on I was not really surprised by the big revealthis book is pure Gothic and if one likesor lovesGothic I really cannot see them not loving Storm Island But the time spent on Kate's visions and druggings and crazy stuff happening felt far to long to meBut I am picky about My Gothic books What I did lovewas the history and the Folklore which really does not come into the picture until than halfway through the book That aspect was fascinating It is an odd book because there were things I liked so much about it but other things where I rolled my eyes a bit And the killing off of one character left a bad taste in my mouth and prompted me to rat er t his a 3 and not a 4It is said this is to be a series and I intend to read the preuel if there is one because I think I just might adore it I hope that other books in the series are less Gothic oriented and focused on the haunting folklore I'd even like to see a preuel that goes back to the group of women who met such an sad end so very long ago Nobody will understand what I just wrote unless they have read the bookDare I say that I disliked Kate's love interest? AlotSo I would recommend this and would rate it a 35 It was a really different type of read

She and her father think she's just been stressed with her residency and he sends her to your aunt and uncle who then send her to their island vacation home for rest and to recuperateKate is forced to come to terms with her last memories of the island home as this is where her mother killed herself and Kate found her bodyNightmares or night terrors continue Is she hallucinating or something worse? She discovers a strange small building deep in the woods and Kate tries to unravel what secrets it might hold But is it real or something else she has conjured out of her mind? She sees things that don't exist she hears things that aren't there she smells her mother's perfume but that's impossibleThis is a well written complex mystery full of twists and turns with just a touch of the paranormal Once started it was hard to put down Unpredictable from start to finish the characters are finely drawn with credibility A little romance just adds to the enjoymentMany thanks to the author BooksGoSocial Netgalley for the digital copy of this mystery Read and reviewed voluntarily opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own

This is a great story and although I am giving it 4 stars I feel for many it will be a five star read The story has a great if somewhat dark and spine tingling feel about it Kate Pomeroy is a doctor but after she has a breakdown she is sent to Storm Island to recover Arriving at the place Kate is finding recovery is about the last thing she will find This is an intriguing mystery and well worth the ride it takes readers on

Doctors threaten to section Katherine in a psychiatric hospital from which she would never escape but Kate is sane isn’t she? Her nightmares make her doubt it but her father gives her a way out provided she spends time on Storm Island in the care of his psychiatrist sister her Aunt HettyKaty hasn’t spent time on the island since she was ten years old when her beloved mother committed suicide but she’ll be safe with Aunt Hetty won’t she?Brilliantly researched and grounded what appears at first to be a paranormal romance is actually a very clever mystery One I couldn’t solve although the clues exist It’s the first in a series and I shall definitely be buying the next
