Author Tara Lazar and illustrator Melissa Crowton join forces in this circus themed picture book about a common childhood experience namely the first day of school Woken by his elder brother a little boy is prepared for school and peppered with advice by the narrator Although the words could be read as pertaining to any school experience the artwork depicts various circus related circumstancesHaving enjoyed other books from both Lazar The Monstore I Thought This Was a Bear Book etc and Crowton Mousie I Will Read to You I fully expected to enjoy Your First Day of Circus School All in all I found it a fun and fresh take on a well explored theme although I wouldn't describe it as a new favorite Somehow Lazar's story idea wasn't as amusing here as in some of her others while Crowton's artwork although colorful and bright wasn't as winsome as in the Mousie book Despite these uibbles overall I did enjoy the book and would certainly recommend it to those looking for new first day of school stories for the picture book set

35 stars rounded down Your First Day of Circus School by Tara Lazar with illustrations by Melissa Crowton is a fun and different take on a child's first day of school A young boy is awakened by his older brother The story takes the reader through all the things a child will encounter upon their first day at school but with a circus twist ie the bus is a clown car new clothes are circus clothes the big tall kid is a circus elephant and so on The best thing about it all is that his brother is there with him making sure he is okay along the way This was a very imaginative story with fun illustrations The book is a take on school readiness and how simple the transition can be especially if you have a big brother to escort you There are some giggles and some things that I explained along the way but overall my grandchildren seemed to enjoy this story The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my reuest The rating ideas and opinions shared are my own

255 Story about first day to school with a metaphoric circus I get what it try to do trying to make the first school day less stressful and funenjoyable but I’m not sure it achieved its goal I find some comparison to be actually stressful and the metaphorical circus not always appropriated Overall not a bad book but not much to it either I wouldn’t recommend it

This is another book that I read for the reading challenge I thought this book was an interesting and had themes that I felt that young children could relate to The idea of someone's first day at school is something that most children can relate to so is easily on my list for books I'd read to children starting school

It’s a first day of school book and all the analogies Lazar can draw using the circus are explored The text guides the reader into sounding like a proper announcer as an older sibling wakes and walks his brother through a first day I can’t imagine a better illustrator to partner Lazar’s text than Crowton Theirs is a colorful and energetic book with plenty of opportunities for humor and charm It’s playfulness is sure to take the edge off any young listener’s first day The color palette makes me think Birthday; bright stand out hues that are still warm Even while the words and images admit to chaos and overwhelming nature to First Days they also reveal a liveliness and adventureTwo of the nicest aspect of this book competing with so many options for First Day Books Black protagonists and the cast is pretty diverse And it is an older sibling encouraging the younger; a nurturing big kid looking out for the youngerYour First Day of Circus School stands out So go ahead Step Right Up

I received an advanced copy of this book While it was a different story about the first day of school it was nothing to set it apart from every other book There was no pay off to keep reading to the end for a child The illustrations are fun but the story just was not strong enough to engage young readers

A first day of school story with a circus themeLadies and gentlemen boys and girls of all ages The first day of school can bring on a variety of emotions Join a nervous boy and his helpful older brother as they navigate the highs and lows of a first day at school The school portrayed in this colorful book is a big top and the teacher is named Miss Stupendous The cafeteria can be a zoo and I mean literally You see docile lions monkeys snakes and seals just meandering the cafeteria The book is a take on school readiness and how simple the transition can be that is IF you have a big brother to escort you If not just read the book for fun instead of for encouragement I wouldn’t have included the line “Don’t let the kids in the HIGHER GRADES run you over “ I think that is negative and a scary thought to a little person Kids will like the steaming pile of poop the giraffe leaves behind at recess

'Your First Day of Circus School' by Tara Lazar with illustrations by Melissa Crowton is a fun take on a child's first day of schoolA young child is awakened by a loud older brother welcoming him to his first day of school Throughout the journey there are comparisons to the circus From clothes that look like circus costumes to animals The bus is a clown car and the tall kid sitting in front of you in class is an elephant Through it all your older brother looks out for you like he shouldI liked the imagination behind this one It kind of makes the school experience seem to be full of imagination even if the reality turns out to be different The illustrations are fun and I liked the details on the pagesI received a review copy of this ebook from Tundra Books Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook

I received a free advanced copy of this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway in exchange for an honest review This picture book is a very cute and uniue take on the “first day of school” theme In this book a little boy is joining his big brother at circus school for the first time There are funny takes on the normal school activities as they would happen in a circus school like how the cafeteria can be a “real zoo” with an illustration of all the circus animals eating with the students Also there’s “a lot to juggle” on your first day with an illustration of the students learning to juggle What makes this book special besides the bright colorful illustrations is that the boy’s big brother is helping him navigate the school day and at the end his big brother promises to be there to “cheer him on every step of the way” It’s nice to see that positive relationship between siblings Highly recommended

In true Tara Lazar style this circus story is a totally new spin on the first day of school It is full of puns heart and humor A nervous child will see how this boy copes with all the feelings and uestions the first day of school brings in such a fun setting As a child I lived near the winter uarters of a circus I loved being able to visit the animals who I believed were my friends As an adult I see that they probably didn’t have the best life which is disheartening Your First Day of Circus School brings me back to the magic of the circus animals and will be a welcome addition in schools and libraries everywhere The illustrations are perfectThank you NetGalley and Tundra Books for a digital copy to review
